Host Rating: 7
Atttack: 8
Sleaze: 7
Data Processing: 10
Firewall: 9
Wow... so Direct Connection then? Not that that really helps with files.

I pretty much lifted those numbers right out of SR5.  Maybe there's another way?  Or maybe Archive is just that good.

Oh, I know. It's just the really unbalanced approach CGL took on Host ratings (or at least files in Hosts). IMO, of course. It works fine for devices since you can get the benefit of direct connection, but when you have to mess around with a file, the numbers kind of go out the window since you're going up against the Host ratings.

From a design standpoint, do you think this was mostly done to get hackers out of the van and into the run?

If the team wants to go the Direct Connection route, that shouldn't be too difficult.  Lots of terminals and other stuff available on the A&M campus.  There are probably some other options available as well.

Probably so, but I think something fell apart when they considered how to handle Files. File defenses are way too strong.

Let's put it this way, from a design perspective, should it be as challenging for a decker to hack into a Host as it is for that decker to edit a file once inside said Host? Because in 5e it is, actually it's harder to do the file because it requires two tests, one to MARK the file, another to edit. All three tests (MARKing the Host, MARKing the File, and Editing the File) use Host Rating + Firewall to defend.

To me, MARKing the Host should be the single-most challenging dice roll for a decker to make. It should really play up the necessity of getting yourself a direct connect to the Host through a slaved device. I think it gets a little weird when you manage to do that, thereby MARKing and entering the Host, but have to roll against a much higher defense pool in order to swipe some pay data or a target file.

This is all just theorizing though, I'm totally cool with playing it RAW. Good thing Archive has a high Edge rating, LOL!

Hot damn, that's a hell of a firewall. I still have the dice pool advantage though, just not by much. 18 dice to 16.

Fuck it, I'll chance it.

Reconfiguring!

Attack 3
Sleaze 6(8)
Data Processing 4
Firewall 5

Programs: Exploit, Stealth, Wrapper
Overclocking: Sleaze
Hot-Sim: Yes
Running Silent: No

Hack on the mother-fucking flyyyyyyy: Logic 8 + Hacking 6 + Hot-Sim 2 + Codeslinger 2: 18d6t5 6

I'm not taking chances. Edge!: Edge Reroll: 12d6t5 5

11 hits, but with Exploit, Stealth and Overclocking, my Sleaze was 10 on that roll. Hit my limit, yo. Let's see the host beat that.

Hosts get Rating in edge dice, right?  ;)

Seriously, I rolled like a 50% success rate, but Archive gets his Mark.  Well done.

Well, that started my overwatch clock, so here's the next group of tasks Archive will perform.

Complex Action: Enter Host - Enter the A&M host
Free: Reconfigure - Swap out Wrapper for Virtual Machine running Baby Monitor and Browse. Overclock Data Processing.
Free: Reconfigure - Swap out Stealth for Toolbox

Then on his second pass:

Simple Action: Change Icon - Changing his Icon to blend in with the other icons inside the host.
Simple Action: Send Message - sending a message to Renegade, will cover in IC
Free: Reconfigure - Swap Sleaze with Data Processing
Free: Reconfigure - Swap Exploit with Encryption

New loadout:

Attack 3
Sleaze 4
Data Processing 6(8)
Firewall 5(6)

Programs: Encryption, Toolbox, Virtual Machine [Browse, Baby Monitor]
Overclocking: Data Processing
Hot-Sim: Yes
Running Silent: No

And now, to begin my Matrix Search inside the host, looking for the blueprints.

Matrix Search (Computer 6 + Intuition 4 + Hot-Sim 2): 12d6t5 6

Not bad at all. Base time of 30 minutes was dropped to 15 by Browse, so at most I'm only facing 1 Overwatch roll.

I'll post in the IC up until this point.

EDIT:

It occurs to me that I have no idea what the inside of the host would look like, so I stopped with him entering the host. I'll let you post what it looks like and all that. Here's the message Archive will send to Renegade.

>>Send Message
>>To: Renegade
>>"I've got someone I need to find. Interested in helping me dig up some data trails?"

He's asking Renegade to help him get a physical location for any of the devices tied to Breeze's killer. He's a rigger, so I figure I could find him, his drones, his RCC, and so on with a little assistance.

Bonus: Matrix Searches inside a Host are always a base time of 1 minute, regardless of the type of information sought after.

IC up.  Go ahead and give me 2 more rolls for your matrix searches.  1 may do it, but let's be safe and keep things moving along.  If the blueprints exist, they'll be somewhere in those gemstones.

ETA: the whole host thing should only take a few moments IC time, so I'm not going to put Renegade's response in the IC, but shortly after Archive jacks out -- or is jacked out -- he'll get the following reply.

<<Incoming Message
<<Sender: Renegade
<<Message: Will this be the end today of the wanted man?  Send the necessaries here?

And assuming Archive is aware of the fact that Breeze's killer is a student at A&M, he would also search for any info on him while inside the host before stepping out. Matrix Search (Computer 6 + Intuition 4 + Hot-Sim 2): 12d6t5 5

Archive hits the threshold for finding a file he believes to be the blueprints of the airport.

I'm ok with the assumption that Archive knows Niles Gray is a student.  Student records would be in the library.  We can retcon that he searches for those before heading to mine, as that's probably what Archive would do.  That roll would find those records no problem.  If you want to look for anything deeper, then you'll need to head to City Hall, where more sensitive data would be kept.  You can apply your roll to either tactic.

Yeah, I figured it was probably in the files he got from Breeze or something. Still not totally clear on how much Jack knows of the knowledge the PCs have.

And he's not gonna go hacking another host after the effort it took to get into this one. I'll let Renegade handle that after I get all relevant info from A&M.

There won't be another Host, just a different "location" in this one.  It's purely a flavor thing, as Hosts are represented in 3D
