Agreed. Customization is part of what makes Shadowrun great. When you lose the ability to customize, all you get is "Oh look, yet ANOTHER Troll street sam with a Panther XXL. Whoop-de-doo."

Hell, Danger Sensei even makes fun of it in one of the fiction pieces.  ;D

Also, one of the novels ("A Fistful Of Data") has someone ask the Decker, "Aren't you a pacifist?" as if all Deckers were, and was surprised when he pops a Spur.  I think there was also some Shadowtalk complaining about just such a thing.

AP really is a great analogue for the complex/simple/free action system....it looks to me to feel a lot like table top from watching the video.  The one thing that worries me from what he says in the video is that they will include "Archtypes"....I really hope that it's not class based.  One of shadowrun's most important and distinctive features is it's skill and abilities based character system.  Even the sega game was quite free in that it had a buy system.  Especially in an online multiplayer game, a skill based character system would be so great because you wouldn't have a million little photocopies of yourself running around.  Sure, people would start min maxing but if they make the "shadowruns" more like Deus Ex style where there is several ways to complete objectives, then min-maxing wouldn't help so much.  Also shadowrun table top really sucks at having "bosses" because they get pwned so fast and if they don't get pwned fast, it's probably a team wipe.  This is going to have to be a heavily strategy based game and I hope they're serious about that when they say it and do a lot better job than something like WoW.
Archetypes are there to make creating chars easier for beginners - they just represent a certain optimized skill/stat/ability package. The game will feature a full chat creation for people alrerady familiar wirh SR.
We are using turn based combat with a heavy dose of tactics - cover, stance, aiming, distance - all that plays a role on top of skills.

Smith and tinker currently have the rights, Cliffhanger productions have permission from S&T to develop a game (apparently going with a browser-based game) and AwakenedMMO.org is working on their own game, with some form of permission from S&T.

best of luck to both. it can't hurt to have more than 1 hit the market.

AwakenedMMO.org is working on their own game, with some form of permission from S&T.

Their permission is "Our founding member approached Microsoft and gained permission in April of 2006 under the provisos that we remain non-commercial and maintain clear references that Shadowrun is owned by Microsoft and Wizkids respectively."

So we'll have to see.

I'm more saddened and disappointed at the SRO devs for being so shortsighted and naive.

You're working on a public-use product using a property you don't own. If you're doing so without hardcopy signed notarized permission from the actual owner, you're going to get the hammer dropped on you sooner or later. This is inevitable.

It's not like its that hard to get that permission, really. Many property owners are willing to strike a deal if you contact them and ask. Look at Mechwarrior Living Legends - fan based public distribution product, yet Microsoft was perfectly willing to grant them a license because they asked.
